What is the difference between carbon black and iron black?
Black is the most common color in our daily life, and it is also very important in industrial production. There are many
black pigments, the two most common are carbon black and iron black. What is the difference between carbon black
and iron black? Should we choose carbon black or iron black for production?
Carbon black
Carbon black is the product of incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons, the main component of carbon black is carbon.
It ‘s the earliest nano-scale materials of human use. carbon black is a kind of inorganic pigment, widely used in rubber,
plastics, ink, paint, sealant and other industries. Carbon black can be divided into ink carbon black, paint carbon black,
sealant carbon black, paper carbon black, plastic carbon black, conductive carbon black, rubber carbon black and so on.
Iron black
The full name of iron black is iron oxide black, which is a black inorganic pigment with iron tetraoxide as the main
component, and its chemical formula is Fe3O4 or Fe2O3·FeO. Its appearance is black powder, refractive index is 2.42,
the particle is cubic shape. Iron black mainly used in paint, ink, building materials coloring, can also be used in electronic
telecommunications industry.
The difference between carbon and iron black
From the introduction of carbon black and iron black above, we can see that they’re are two completely different substances,
the main component of carbon black is elemental carbon, and the main component of iron black is ferric oxide. Carbon black
is produced by burning hydrocarbons, and iron black is produced by burning iron wires.
Iron oxide black has excellent physical and chemical properties. It is a green environmental protection pigment which has
strong covering power, high coloring power, soft color, stable performance, non-toxic and alkali resistant. Iron oxide black
has a certain stability to weak acid and dilute acid, has excellent light resistance, heat resistance, soluble in water, has
excellent anti-rust, anti-ultraviolet and other effects. Mainly used in color cement, plastic, rubber, ceramics, paint, building
materials and so on.
Carbon black is mainly divided into pigment carbon black, reinforced carbon black, conductive carbon black and so on.
Pigment carbon black used as coloring pigment in ink, paint, coatings, etc. According to the coloring intensity (or blackness)
and particle size, it is generally divided into high pigment carbon black, medium pigment carbon black, ordinary pigment
carbon black and low pigment carbon black four kinds. Carbon black is one of pigments which is the most difficult to disperse.
Which is better, iron oxide black or carbon black?
Compared with iron oxide black, carbon black has more advantages. The coloring power of carbon black is better than that
of iron oxide black, and its price is lower. The chemical properties of carbon black are more stable than iron oxide black, and
it is not easy to react with other chemicals, carbon black has higher blackness, and strong coloring power.
